Changes to Gift Cards Expiry

From 31 March 2018 in NSW:

  • Selected gift cards and vouchers sold are valid for 3 years, even if they are pre-printed with a shorter expiry period
  • Once gift cards and vouchers are purchased, administration fees that reduce the card balance are prohibited, however, transaction costs such as booking fees and foreign currency conversion fees can be applied.

Please note, a Financial Services gift card that uses MasterCard, eftpos, Visa or a similar electronic payment system will be excluded until 30 September 2018 when they must comply with the new laws.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Does my gift card purchased prior to 31 March have a 3 year expiry?
    No. This is a new update to all gift cards sold after the 31 March 2018 in NSW. Selected gift card brands will make this change nationally. In addition, Coles Group gift cards will be updated to have a 4 year expiry, from the issue date.

  2. What if I want to find out the expiry date of my gift card?
    For Coles Group gift cards, go to Check Gift Card Balance

    For gift cards sold in NSW on or after 31 March 2018 the expiry will be 3 years from the Issue Date. Please refer to the Issue date Month/Year on the back of the gift card.

  3. What if I want to return a gift card and repurchase after the 31 March 2018 to get the 3 year expiry on my gift card purchase?
    There are no returns or refunds for change of mind purchases on gift cards as per current Key conditions of use.

  4. Will there be a message on my receipt?
    For Coles Group gift cards the expiry date will be printed on the customer receipt.
    For other gift cards there will be no message printed on the receipt or at the register.

  5. What if I purchased a gift card in NSW, however don’t live in NSW and want to redeem the card in another state, how does this affect the expiry?
    For Third Party Gift cards, the expiry will be 3 years as this change applies to all gift cards sold in NSW after 31 March 2018.

    For Coles Group gift cards, a 4 year expiry will apply to cards sold after the 31 March 2018.

  6. Are there any Third Party gift cards* exempt from 3 Year expiry legislation in NSW?
    Yes. Some Third Party gift cards* simply do not expire e.g. iTunes

    * Third Party gift cards are other gift cards that are not Coles Group or Coles Group & Myer gift cards.
